Better Business Bureau warns about a new scam involving bank checks sent in the mail made out to the addressee.

BBB representatives told us, a check would come with instructions to cash it and then mail some of the money back to the sender.

The check would probably be for a large sum. It would take a couple of days for a bank to cash. And when it turned out illegitimate, the bank would go after the person who cashed it to recover the losses.

"And your bank will take the funds back and hold you responsible for those funds," said Sheryl Bilbrey with BBB.

BBB advised if you do not expect a check in the mail and receive one from someone you don't know, you should throw it away.

"Temple Terrace Police Department expands crime prevention efforts through social media."

On February 18, 2013, the Temple Terrace Police Department will begin using social media to support local Crime Watch programs and further enhance the department’s crime prevention efforts. Starting next week, important information related to community events, public safety and local crime will be available on the department’s Facebook page at

www.facebook.com/templeterracepolice.

Facebook’s wide-spread popularity provides an affective platform for sharing information in a timely manner. Many law enforcement agencies across the nation have turned to Facebook to increase public awareness of local events and crime patterns. Social media is a convenient and unobtrusive way for the police department to share information of public interest in real time and receive feedback from the community.

Police-community partnerships are the backbone of crime prevention in any community. The department’s new Facebook page will help foster interactive information sharing and provide for a larger network of partnerships in support of crime prevention and public safety throughout Temple Terrace.

For more information on the department’s new Facebook page, Neighborhood Crime Watch, or any department program, please contact the Crime Prevention Unit at (813) 506-6529

A possible email scam that one of our neighbor watch members found in their email. They received this knowing that they are up to date on all payments. If there is any discrepancy in your account with any company I would suggest you call them directly from a listed number. Do not randomly respond to a link in an email and give out your personal information.

I have just been contacted by a resident in the south end of the city regarding a phone scam targeting our residents. It is as follows:

A person calls claiming to be with Medicare. They advise that Medicare is issuing new cards to their members and they need to confirm information. The caller is insistent that you give them your bank account number to complete the new card issuance and verification process. DO NOT DO THIS!

There is no reputable company that will ask for this type of information. As a general phone safety rule, don’t answer the phone if you don’t recognize the number, is a private number or no caller identification is present in the display on your phone. Let it go to voice mail then review it later. If you feel uncomfortable with the call hang up. If that 6th sense is telling you something is not right hang up. Use common sense in your approach to your financial records. If you feel it is unresolved then call the actual company the caller is claiming to be representing and check with them. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER THEY CALLED FROM OR THAT THEY PROVIDED. LOOK IT UP IN THE DIRECTORY.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.

 CHILD SAFETY TIP

Before departing with children/grandchildren/kids to any event, take a second, pull out your cell phone and take individual pictures of each child. That way, if the unthinkable happens and a child gets lost, you have a picture of how they are dressed and what they looked like that day. The photo can then be immediately sent to police to aid in locating the child. Seconds can be precious in this scenario, so take a second, make it a habit and take a picture!
