‘Click It or Ticket’ to Boost Seat Belt Use – Day And Night
(TEMPLE TERRACE, FL – 5/17/13) – As motorists take to the roads this upcoming Memorial
Day holiday, the Temple Terrace Police Department is urging everyone to buckle up.  Beginning
May 20, 2013, law enforcement officials will be out in full force, taking part in the 2013 national
Click It or Ticket seat-belt enforcement mobilization and cracking down on motorists who are not
“As we kick off  the busy summer driving season, it’s important that everyone buckles up every
time they go out, both day and night – no excuses,” said TTPD Capt. Mike Pridemore.  “Our
officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt.”
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), 52 percent of the 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011
were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Moreover, statistics show, such deaths
are more prevalent at night than during the daytime. According to NHTSA, 62 percent of the
10,135 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011 during the overnight hours of 6 p.m. to 5:59
a.m. were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
“Seat belts save thousands of lives every year, but far too many motorists are still not buckling
up, especially at night when the risk of getting in a crash is even greater,” said Pridemore.  “We
want everyone to have a safe summer, but it requires an important step on the part of motorists –
clicking that seat belt.”
In 2011, seat belts saved an estimated 11,949 lives nationwide according to NHTSA. While this
year’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement mobilization runs from May 20 through June 2, officers
are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round.

Better Business Bureau warns about a new scam involving bank checks sent in the mail made out to the addressee.

BBB representatives told us, a check would come with instructions to cash it and then mail some of the money back to the sender.

The check would probably be for a large sum. It would take a couple of days for a bank to cash. And when it turned out illegitimate, the bank would go after the person who cashed it to recover the losses.

"And your bank will take the funds back and hold you responsible for those funds," said Sheryl Bilbrey with BBB.

BBB advised if you do not expect a check in the mail and receive one from someone you don't know, you should throw it away.

TECO has issued a customer warning of a scam happening in their service area.

Tampa Electric continues to warn customers about prepaid debit card scam

TAMPA, December 19, 2012

A scammer demanding a prepaid debit card continues to call Tampa Electric customers under the guise of avoiding disconnection.

Because this scam continues to affect Tampa Electric customers – and because December is Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month – Tampa Electric would like to remind customers to be wary of anyone demanding payment over the phone for their power bill.

This scam first surfaced in the summer: Someone impersonating a Tampa Electric representative calls a customer and claims the account is past due. The caller demands the customer buy a prepaid debit card from a local drug store and call back with the card’s number to avoid disconnection. In about five cases, the scammer ensnared customers.

Tampa Electric never calls to ask for credit card or debit card numbers.

If you are uncertain about an individual's association with Tampa Electric, please contact the company for verification:
